What is an under-deck drainage system?

An under-deck drainage system is a horizontal membrane or interlocking panel system mounted to the underside of an elevated deck's joists. It intercepts water that passes through the deck boards above, directing it to gutters and downspouts at the perimeter. The system keeps the ground or usable area beneath the deck dry.

Common materials include polycarbonate panels, vinyl-coated aluminum, or rubber membrane barriers. The panels slope slightly or are angled to prevent water pooling. Installation requires routing the system to existing drainage or creating new outlets to channel water away from the deck footings and the space below.

Under-deck systems serve two main purposes. First, they protect decks themselves by moving water away from the supporting structure and posts, reducing rot and decay. Second, they convert what would otherwise be wasted space under the deck into a functional dry zone suitable for storage, covered patio seating, or shelter. In the Greater Charlotte climate where summer rain and afternoon thunderstorms are common, these systems allow homeowners to use the area beneath a deck year-round.

The system is distinct from the deck itself. While some homeowners add open grating or basic fascia below a deck, a true drainage system uses sloped or channeled materials designed to actively move water outward and downward rather than simply blocking it.
